After the passing of HH Dudjom Rinpoche in 1987, Kyabje Mindrolling Trichen Jurme Kunzang Wangyal, was chosen as the ceremonial head of the NYINGMA lineage, the oldest school of Tibetan Buddhism.

Revered within the Tibetan community as an emanation of Padmasambhava, His Holiness the XIth Mindrolling Trichen is revered and respected throughout the Buddhist world as a great Mahasiddha and one of the greatest accomplished Tibetan Buddhist masters of this century.

Actually the Nyingmas only agreed to name a "head of the lineage" because the other schools all had one. They didn't consider themselves to be a "school" in the same sense as the other lineages like the Gelug, Sakya, etc. are schools, but reluctantly agreed to name a "Head." The Nyingmas are much less hierarchical. They are the anarchists of Tibetan Buddhism and are the oldest of the Tibetan lineages. The Mindrolling is one of many Nyingma lineages, some very small. It will be interesting to see if they name a new Head.

Right -- 'ceremonial head' is just a name. I believe that it is only since the exile, that HHDL has asked each lineage to choose representatives when it comes to council.

Yes, I believe that's right. The Dalai Lama asked them to choose one, so they reluctantly did so.
